Who is Colin Mutchler?
As
a musician and artist, Colin has been writing and performing
since 1995. Living in Brooklyn, NY since 1999 to 2005, he performed at
venues such as Halcyon, the Bowery Poetry Club, and the Sidewalk Cafe. As
a solo
musician, he has been described as being uniquely able to address broad political
topics while still keeping the music intimate, personal and organic.
Committed to participating in the creative commons, Colin contributed an acoustic guitar track titled "My Life" to Opsound in 2003. In a matter of weeks, a young violinist from North Carolina, Cora Beth, added to it and renamed it "My Life Changed." Since then, the exchange has been highlighted by many, including Lawrence Lessig and a Creative Commons animation, as an example of what's possible in the emerging commons.
An
active photographer and media artist since 1999, Colin's
photography and footage include a photo documentary on the Durham (NC)
Police Department, as well as video projects such as Idioteque and
Quality Entertainment, which have been selected for several film festivals
in the United States.
Colin is also a social entrepreneur committed to using media and the internet to inspire cultures and economies to take action toward sustainability, responsibility, and freedom. His work as Web Producer for Listen Up!, a national youth media network, and previous work for New Profit Inc. and NYC Public School 7 have enabled him to continue working toward his vision for activefreemedia. Colin spent the spring of 1998 in Cochabamba, Bolivia researching the positive effects of community empowerment on development, and has a degree in Public Policy Studies from Duke University. He is currently getting his MBA from Insead Business School in both France and Singapore.
