Who are the people behind activefreemedia?
Since 2000, activefreemedia has drawn expertise from a diverse range of social entrepreneurs, artists, consultants, and software developer, as well as the continued support from friends, partners, and the communities that interconnect us.
Colin Mutchler, Founder
Colin is an advocate for using media and technology to inspire people and cultures to take action toward a sustainable economy.
He brings a depth of experience in and a commitment to
building an emerging sector of the economy known as "New Profit/For Benefit", which merges the market based demands and efficiency of the for-profit sector
with the values and commitment of the non-profit world. Colin currently works as a Producer for the leading interactive agency R/GA.
Before starting activefreemedia in July of 2000, Colin worked at New Profit Inc., a cutting-edge venture philanthropy firm, contributing to the development of
both their funding guidelines and their web site. He worked for Transforms
researching and developing models for the emerging "For Benefit" market. Formerly, Colin was a Media Center Teacher at PS 7, an elementary school
in East Harlem, where he became increasingly aware of the need for media that
empowers people and institutions to transform their lives and society. Most
recently, Colin worked as Web Producer for Learning Matters Inc., which produces The Merrow Report, a PBS documentary series on youth and learning, and Listen Up!, a national youth media network.
Colin spent the spring of 1998 in Cochabamba, Bolivia researching the positive
effects of community empowerment on development. In 1999, Colin completed a
photo documentary on the Durham Police Department and its relationship with
the local community, where he demonstrated his commitment to utilizing media
to create cross-cultural understanding. Colin is a digital video editor, whose
most recent collaborative video project, 'quality entertainment,' was selected
for the Prospect Heights Film/Video Festival in Brooklyn.
He is also a multimedia performer who recently organized and implemented an international Free Culture Tour to help build participation in the creative commons. His collaborative song My Life Changed has been highlighted by many, including Lawrence Lessig and Creative Commons, as an example of what's possible in the emerging digital commons.
